Grapplers are always the best characters in the game in the first week. The thing about this matchup is that you actually have to play super-lame. You can't just run in and press buttons against Kanji, you will get grabbed for half your health.

I've had a lot of success with throwing out j. D at low jump heights to shut down his angles of approach while staying mobile. A good way to beat random dive is to memorize the ranges (there's only two, plus EX) and watch for the dive when you're in those ranges. If he's in the air, he'll throw it out, so either backdash or crouch and get your 2C on deck for an FC punish.

When he gets frustrated and starts throwing out random stuff, or trying to lightning you, that's when you dash in for pressure (you'll also have to do this if you get behind in life, god forbid). In that case, just make sure you keep your blockstrings safe by ending them with 5C or 2C. This will put you out of range of his command grab. And if you get into the nightmare scenario and have to, like, block a chairjump or something, just remember that your DP beats literally everything he can do besides his own DP.

I rarely lose to Kanji online, although I will say that I win maybe 2/5 times by time up. But, hey, whatever works.

Frankly, doing anything against the jump dive other than just downbacking is probably a bad idea

I've gotten in the habit of downbacking when he's in the air until he gets into the range where he might be able to do jump B on me, at which point I'll block high and try to react to any dives at that point.

This is definitely a match where you want to use kunais a ton, and make use of the jiraiya-hadoken that is j.D. Shorthop j.D is pretty amazing, since it's a little easier to line up where you want then trying to do it on the way down from a normal jump, and it should be out much faster that way as well.

you can ex dash him when he tries to lightning bolt
his dp can be blocked and 2c fatal
    you can dp his grabs

yea i pretty much just toss out kunais he can't anti air it with his persona and it puts you out of 2b range and he's usually too slow to punish it (i might believe he can just throw out 236 not sure though)
when he jumps just make some distance and hold downback

thats all i have right now i dont really know the rest of kanji's tools

oh and you never want a piece of "YOU WANT SOME!"

    you dont want any..

You don't need to go in on this matchup... space him out, use j.D coverage if you want to approach.
