NORCAL DOGFIGHT! featuring Persona 4 Arena danisen and team events!
also featuring Guilty Gear, Gundam Extreme Versus, and AQUAPAZZA

What is Norcal Dogfight?

Norcal Dogfight is a regular event that takes place every 3rd Saturday at Gamecenter and first started with Guilty Gear and Gundam EXVS. We are going to run events for Persona 4 Arena and AQUAPAZZA as well but we're mostly looking to run a danisen and team events! We'll probably leave the double-elim singles ranbats to Norcal Install which you may or may not have already heard of.

Venue fee? $7 to play on the setups, spectating is free.

Tournament fee(s)? Danisens are free to enter but 2on2s and 3on3s etc will have an entry fee.

What is a danisen?

A danisen is a system where you play for points and ranking and it's been done in Japan for quite some time now. It's a competitive event that happens on a more frequent basis (like weekly or biweekly) and everyone loves a ranking system. Since Persona is a new game and everyone's going to be starting at the same time, a danisen would be really fun! There's no special entry fee and it's not exactly a tournament, but it adds excitement to casuals and provides some incentive to take casuals seriously.

So how do points and ranks work?

Whenever you win a match, you win a point and when you lose a match, you lose a point. Typically whenever you get +3 points you rank up and whenever you are at -3 points you rank down. When you rank up or down, your points will reset to zero. However there is a bottom and you cannot derank further than the lowest rank (1dan ±0).

You can only fight players within one rank of yourself. So if you are rank 2, you can fight rank 1 and 3 players but you can't fight a rank 4 player. Your rank is also locked to your character so if you decide to change characters, you have to play at the appropriate rank.

What does a danisen demand from the players?

Given the competitive nature of a danisen, it would be silly to only have it every month and it'd be silly to have it if we didn't have a solid number of players. Danisens should really be weekly or biweekly and we'd need consistent numbers so this is more of a commitment. Of course you don't have to come to every danisen but to the community and playerbase as a whole, it's a commitment.

Now if people were to get behind this danisen event in full force, having a biweekly strictly on Saturdays at the same venue would probably be difficult. We currently have every third Saturday of the month at Gamecenter but we could have a mini-Dogfight on a different day of the week and since we wouldn't have all day to work with, it'd be an off-week meaning we wouldn't have as many games and there may not be a team event for Persona. On the regular Dogfights, meaning every 3rd Saturday of the month, we'd definitely have a special event (e.g. a giant team battle, a kumite, 2on2 or 3on3 team events, etc). The events may be based on danisen rankings and may affect your rank as well =)

Hey thanks for coming out! Although I've run a danisen before for GGAC, it was a much smaller turnout so I learned a lot, hopefully everything will run better next time! The Akihiko player who really helped out with everything was tenkai! Much thanks to several people for helping out and making this event possible: magz, tenkai, Tsubasa, thkthkthkthk, lark, Manabe, Kijiyama, Myung, Martin, Coopa, Chun, and anyone else who went out of their way to help out at the event or even helped publicize the event!
