Why do the characters have their old personas?

Could be they just thought the original persona were more iconic, so they decided to use them for artistic reasons, as opposed to plot reasons.

I was told everyone uses their ultimate personas at the end of Persona 4: The Animation. I never watched it myself, but a friend watches it and I ask him. But then again, he hasn't played the game so he could be incorrect.
If he isn't, though, would that imply that the game was actually based off of the anime?

Could be for a variety of reasons really.

• Because it was optional in P4.
• Because they are redesigning them for the Golden.
• Because they didn't want to have Persona discrepancy between the anime when it was airing.
• Because they haven't matured/mastered fully yet.
• Because they are more iconic.
• Because they might want to leave that to the story mode.

I agree completely.
This is pretty much the collective list for all reasons they didn't decide to use ultimates. Design-wise, I perfer the originals a bit more.

Like others have said, it isn't canon that they get their ultimate Personae (except for Teddie and Yu).
